Agra
- Home to Tajmahal |
|
Agra is famous as
being home to one of the seven wonders of the world-the Taj
Mahal. The architectural splendor of the mausoleums, the
fort and the palaces is a vivid reminder of the capital in
the 16th and early 17th centuries. Agra is known for its
superb inlay work on marble and soapstone by craftsman who
are descendant of those who worked under the Mughals.
The
magnificent Taj Mahal which is the pride of this city is set
around a Charbagh or 'four garden' plan, which is split by
watercourses - a reflection of the Persian style.
Besides the Taj Mahal,
Agra is also home to some of the finest monuments of the
Mughal period - Agra Fort, Diwan-I-Am, Diwan-i-Khas,
Musamman Burj, Jehangir's Palace, Shish Mahal, Jama Masjid,
Tomb of Itmad-ud-daulah, Akbar's Mausoleum, and the
Mariyam's Tomb, to name a few. The Mughal love for nature
can be seen at Agra in the form of Ram Bagh, one of the
earliest gardens, laid by the Mughal ruler Babur, in 1528
AD. The old part of the city that includes the main
marketplace (Kinari Bazar) is northwest to the Agra fort.Besides
being a historic city, Agra has shades of modernity as is
typical of any Indian city. Today, luxury and modern
convenience also exist adjacent to tradition - luxury
hotels, shopping malls and plazas, wide avenues and a superb
choice of venues for recreation, business, sports, pleasure,
education and the arts.
Other important places
in Agra include the Red Fort, Sikandara and Fatehpur Sikri.

Taj Mahal |
 |
The Taj mahal ,the famous monument of love was
constructed by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jehan in the memory of his
beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is ethereal at any part of the
day - blushing in the rosy glow of dawn or sunset , appearing like a
pearly mirage in the moonlight or reflected in the pools of the garden .
Perhaps the most moving view of the Taj is from an octagonal tower in
the Agra Fort further along the river Yamuna . It was here that the
emperor Shah Jehan was imprisoned and where he spent his last days
gazing at the tomb of his beloved.
Taj Mahal Timings
The Archaeological Survey of India has decided that Taj Mahal will
remain closed on Fridays for the public except for those who go for
afternoon prayers in the mosque next to the 17th century monument. The
Taj will remain open from 6 am-7 pm everyday except Fridays. On Fridays, people
will be allowed to go for the customary prayers between 1200 hrs 1400
hrs at the mosque in the Taj Mahal complex. Described by the Indian classical poet Tagore as a "tear on the face of
eternity", the Taj Mahal is undoubtedly the zenith of Mogul
architecture and quite simply one of the world's most marvelous
buildings.
